Plain and simple – The Count of Monte Cristo is the best fiction book I have read. Done deal.  Several months ago I decided to start reading some of the “classics” so that I would be more interesting and cultured at the various high brown functions us Calgary mortgage brokers are invited to.  I figured it would teach me how to use various high brow Parisian words such as BOUDOIR or BOURGEOISIE in my daily conversations.  And yes, it did but it also did so much more.

This book has more twists, curves, and bumps than a big eater at the Heart Attack Grill.  The storyline and setup of the plot and ultimate vindication are truly marvelous and a joy to read.  I found myself bringing it up in conversations with my wife and continually marveling at the attention to detail and fluidity of the writing.  I really appreciated the sense that I received from the author that he was not trying to write a book and collect a cheque, as is quite common among many contemporary writers, rather he was weaving together a grand story, an epic.

Ps. This book is also free via Project Gutenberg. So before you feel the need to pick up and read the newest piece of pulp fiction, check out The Count of Monte Cristo and let me know what you think.

PPs. What does this have to do with Mortgages in Canada or me being a Calgary Mortgage Broker?  Not a lot, but hey who wants to do business with a dull robot (aka a banker) so give me a ring, I am happy to chat.
